Life insurance is available for individuals with felony convictions, though the type of felony, how long ago it occurred, and the applicant's current circumstances all significantly affect the options and rates available. Carriers evaluate felony history as part of the overall risk assessment, considering the nature of the offense, time since conviction, rehabilitation evidence, and current lifestyle.
For non-violent felonies (such as white-collar crimes, drug possession, or property crimes) that occurred more than 10 years ago, with no subsequent legal issues, many carriers will consider applications at Standard or even Standard Plus rates. The passage of time and evidence of rehabilitation are the most important factors. Some carriers may consider applications with non-violent felonies as recent as five years ago.
For violent felonies or felonies involving controlled substances distribution, the waiting period for traditional underwriting is typically longer — often 10 years or more from the completion of all sentencing requirements (including probation and parole). During any period of incarceration, probation, or parole, most carriers will decline the application.
Drug-related felonies receive particular scrutiny because of the correlation with substance abuse concerns. Carriers will evaluate whether there is evidence of ongoing drug use, substance abuse treatment history, and current health markers. Some carriers are more lenient on marijuana-related convictions than convictions involving other substances.
Individuals currently on probation or parole, or with very recent convictions, may need to rely on guaranteed issue products or employer group coverage (which typically does not include criminal background checks). A licensed agent in our network can evaluate your specific circumstances and identify the best available options. All coverage is subject to underwriting approval.
